About 15 kilometres northeast of Sanliurfa lies Göbeklitepe, a sanctuary that built about 11.500 years before, which is currently the oldest known temple in the world.
It is located on the highest point of an elongated mountain ridge. In the temple, excavations were started in 1995 and numerous animal sculptures were discovered. These were made by the Neolithic hunter-gatherers.
