Avanos is located on the Kizilirmak, the longest river in Turkey. This small town of about 15.000 inhabitants dates back to the Hittite period.
Accordingly, there are numerous historical relics from different eras that the city witnessed. Persians, Romans, Seljuks and many other great people have left traces of their rule. The town is especially famous for its residents who are skilled in making elaborate hand-made pottery. In the numerous small pottery shops, people can watch the artisans at work and buy beautiful souvenirs.
