Under the city of Derinkuyu (literally “deep well”), 40 kilometres south of Nevsehir, is the most famous underground city of Cappadocia.
Eight previously exposed floors with apartments, stores, churches and monastery parts that are connected by locking blocks are grouped around the 85-meter deep shaft of an elaborate ventilation system. Here once, up to 20,000 people founded a refuge. It currently has 1,500 square feet of space, but it is believed that this is only a quarter of the entire system.
