The city is located in the Anatolian highlands and is surrounded by an undulating mountainous landscape. Artificial lakes are located around the urban area and are used both as water supply and for recreational reasons. The main artery of the city is the Ataturk Boulevard. The five-kilometre-long main axis road with the tree rows, which is the main traffic artery and the main shopping street, combines the heart of the old city (Ulus Square) with the new town in the south. It is also a place between the Lozan Square and Ismet Inonu Square where one can take a nice walk out in the evenings.
